Why Change My Name?
By: Sandy Pinkerton

Recently while having a conversation with our seven year old son, Isaiah, he asked, why did you change my name? It's one of those questions that seems to come and go, but doesn't seem to linger for long periods of time. After giving him many valid reasons why we thought it necessary to change his name. He still asked, WHY? Wasn't my Vietnamese name good enough? Didn't you like that name? As parents it made us stop and think.

We sat and talked about the meaning of the name Isaiah, which means, Saved by God. Also the meaning of his Vietnamese name, Hung, which means, Strong Hero. When you put the two names together, how special and unique that makes him. He not only has a name from his home country of Vietnam, but he also has a name chosen for him by his parents.

For a while he wanted to be called by his Vietnamese name only, which we did. Although from time to time we would slip and call him Isaiah. That was important to him at the time. For now he seems to be happy with both names. We are certain this subject will come up again. I'm sure the next time we will be able to take the discussion to a deeper level.
